Culture 4 Change — Supporting recovery from collective trauma through body-oriented practice

As co-founders of Culture 4 Change (C4C), we have worked for many years in countries affected by war, displacement, and collective violence, including Afghanistan, Burundi, Cambodia, Iraq, Myanmar, Rwanda, Sudan, and other regions experiencing humanitarian crises. Throughout this work, we have witnessed that what initially appears impossible is often achievable. No matter how painful the circumstances, the human capacity to survive, adapt, and rebuild one’s life is remarkable.

These experiences inspired us to further develop our work in the field of complex and collective trauma. At the request of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), C4C provides training, clinical supervision, and therapeutic support to professionals working with individuals and communities affected by trauma. Our work combines practical field experience with contemporary knowledge from trauma psychology, neuroscience, and body-oriented psychotherapy.

Current research shows that trauma is not simply the result of life-threatening or violent events, or even prolonged periods of overwhelming stress. Rather, trauma develops when the body’s natural responses to threat are unable to be completed and integrated. As a consequence, the physiological activation associated with shock, fear, and helplessness may remain unresolved within the nervous system. These unresolved survival responses can manifest much later as physical, emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal difficulties that often appear disconnected from the original experience.

This understanding has fundamentally changed the way trauma is treated. Van der Kolk (2014) demonstrates that traumatic experiences are not only remembered cognitively but are also reflected in the body and nervous system, affecting emotional regulation, perception, and behaviour. Likewise, Selvam (2022) emphasizes that recovery requires expanding a person’s capacity to embody, tolerate, and integrate emotional and physiological experience, allowing unresolved survival activation to be gradually processed and released.

Integral Somatic Psychology® (ISP) is a body-oriented therapeutic approach developed by Dr. Raja Selvam. Building on the principles of Somatic Experiencing® and integrating insights from both Western psychology and Eastern contemplative traditions, ISP supports the integration of emotional, cognitive, physiological, relational, and experiential processes. Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, the approach aims to increase the body’s capacity to remain present with difficult emotions while supporting the nervous system in completing previously interrupted survival responses. Through the use of awareness, intention, imagination, movement, breath, and specific forms of self-touch, clients gradually develop greater resilience, emotional flexibility, and access to their natural capacity for healing and growth.

In addition to providing therapeutic support, the co-founder of C4C is actively involved in the international professional training of therapists and mental health practitioners in Integral Somatic Psychology®. She assists Dr. Raja Selvam during professional ISP training programs in Belgium, Croatia, Israel, Spain, and the Netherlands, while providing clinical supervision and facilitating practice sessions that help participants translate theory into therapeutic practice.

Integral Somatic Psychology® (Become a More Effective Therapist with Integral Somatic Psychology®) as developed by Raja Selvam, PhD, is a master training for therapists, social workers and humanitarian workers that work with people affected by adverse life events. The approach aims to increase the body’s capacity to remain present with difficult emotions while supporting the nervous system in completing previously interrupted survival responses.
The co-founder of C4C (www.therapie-bibianevanmierlo.com) will be actively involved in these upcoming trainings; she will provide workshops in Belgium and Poland, and assist Raja Selvam during ISP training programs in Austria, Croatia, Israel, Spain, and the Netherlands, while providing clinical supervision and facilitating practice sessions that help participants translate theory into therapeutic practice.
