Cambodia is entering a profound demographic transition. More and more older adults are living with chronic illness, mobility challenges, loneliness, and memories of a difficult past. In Phnom Penh, families do their best to care for parents and grandparents, yet balancing this responsibility with full-time work has become increasingly overwhelming. At the same time, safe and structured daytime care options are almost entirely absent.
At Culture4Change (C4C), we believe that ageing with dignity should be possible for every Cambodian family. We are developing elderly daycare models and Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs (ISHCs) that honour Cambodia’s cultural values while responding to today’s realities. Our pilot Elderly Daycare Center in Phnom Penh will provide a warm, protective environment with meaningful daily activities, gentle rehabilitation, cognitive stimulation, nutritious meals, basic health monitoring, and opportunities for social connection.
Rooted in trauma-aware practice, Buddhist principles, and existing community networks, this model aims to support families, strengthen communities, and ensure that older Cambodians feel seen, valued, and connected.
